Mel Bigley

Part of show business is magic. You don't know how it happens.

— Sammy Davis, Jr.

Our dear friend Melvin George Bigley IV, of West Hartford, passed on peacefully at home on Sunday, April 8, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He delighted Szechuan Tokyo diners every Friday for years as "Mel The Magician." On the days he had other engagements, children and adults alike would clamor, "Where's Mel?!"

He also shared his musical talents with us, as leader of his band, Jelly Roll Jam.

Few people we've encountered over the years possessed the enormous heart and amazing karma that Mel did. He will be sorely missed by us, and all of those who had the opportunity to be entertained by him.

Our sincerest condolences and prayers go out to his lovely wife and family and friends, who were constantly at his side during his last months.

Click here to go to the Hartford Courant's obituary page for information about services and to sign Mel's guest book.
