LIVIU
POP FUNK-JAZZ INVITATIONAL (TRIO). MIKE TORSONE, Hammond B-3; BOB
LUSTGARTEN, Guitar; LIVIU POP, drums. Showtime 8:00.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
MICHAEL
TORSONE has developed one of the most professional sounds in the
music community. This smooth, cool sound of jazz is generated by the
world renowned Hammond B3 organ. The powerful but controlled voice of
Michael in combinations with the vintage instrument creates the
nostalgic and natural groove that cannot be replicated by the electronic
chicanery of modern, electronic keyboards. His versatility and
conviction to Jazz, Blues and R & B, augmented by his magnetic stage
presence is the cornerstone to the success that Michael currently
enjoys.
Michael’s first exposure to the world of music was through his family
and the popular music of his youth. Michael grew up in a family of
talented performers. His grandfather came to America in 1909, with a
cornet case and a dream for a brighter future. He taught music in
Amsterdam, New York and in the New York City Schools, as well as forming
concert bands in both places.
By the end of his High School years Michael was devoting many hours
to the “O’Leary Brothers Band”, where he was a piano player. Michael
received his first Hammond organ as a High School graduation present in
1971. This was the catalyst to the future success of the now
accomplished musician and vocalist.
It was this gift that initiated Michael’s obsession to understand the
mechanical artistry of the Hammond organ and the Leslie tone cabinet to
the point of becoming a master Hammond organ/Leslie tone cabinet
technician himself. Today, Michael Torsone’s collection of Hammond
organs and Leslie speakers consists of 14 organs and 20 Leslies.
By age 30, Michael had shared his technical acumen with such well
known organists as Felix Cavaliere, Jimmy McGriff, Richard “Groove”
Holmes and others.
His early musical influences included artists such as Ray Charles,
Felix Cavaliere and the Rascals, Vanilla Fudge, B.B. King, Santana,
Tower of Power, Lee Michaels, The Allman Brothers, Steven Winwood, Keith
Emerson, Yes, Deep Purple, Steppenwolf, Argent, The J. Giles band, Brian
Auger and booker T. Jones.

and records with some of the nation's biggest names in jazz and pop,

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
VOCALIST KAREN FRISK WITH KENT HEWITT AND THE GANG. Showtime: 8:00.
Kindly call 860-561-0180 for reservations and further information.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
KAREN FRISK is a jazz vocalist who has performed in several
areas of the country with local and world-renowned jazz artists.
Originally from Cromwell, Connecticut, Karen always claimed she was
singing before she was speaking. She started singing with recordings at
the age of four and by the time she was seven she entertained the
neighborhood by holding small musical productions in her home. After
participating in church choirs, local community musical theatre
productions and studying classical voice at Richard Donohue Studios,
Karen was selected to tour Bavaria and perform with the Concordia Youth
Choir sponsored through the Boston Conservatory.
In her late teens the “jazz bug” bit her… swing, Latin jazz and R&B
filled her soul and the rest is history. She started studying jazz piano
with Merrill Doucette at the Hartford Conservatory and then moved on to
study jazz/pop vocals and performance with Roberta Peck-Vater, a music
educator and Capitol Records recording artist.
Karen moved to Cape Cod in the 1980’s and worked with local and
Boston area musicians as a vocalist participating in benefit concerts,
jazz venues, and weddings. She has shared the stage with many premier
jazz artists including Dave McKenna, world-renowned pianist; Dick
Johnson, former Artie Shaw Orchestra band leader; Gray Sargent,
guitarist currently with the Tony Bennett Orchestra. She moved back to
Connecticut in the early 1990’s and has since been performing in the
Northeast as well as other parts of the country, and has been revered as
one of the premier jazz vocalists in Southern New England.
Karen has a very diverse sound. Within her five-octave range, her
vocal styles cover breathy ballads to heart-wrenching blues, sexy Latin
rhythms to up-tempo swing and more. Although she has been influenced by
some of her favorite artists… Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Ella
Fitzgerald, Shirley Horn, Maxine Sullivan, Rosemary Clooney, Joe
Williams, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Tony Bennett . . . Karen has
developed a sound all her own. She loves to bend the notes, play with
the timing and keep swingin’!
KENT
HEWITT (piano): Kent has been a mainstay of jazz and popular piano
in Southern New England for many years. A consummate soloist and
accompanist, he has been musical director for numerous popular
Connecticut jazz clubs. Kent leads his own trio which features a
“Tribute to the Great Pianists” of the Golden Era of Jazz. His recent CD
Time on my Hands is a jazz trio recording of unique and elegant
standards from great American and Brazilian composers.
He has recorded TV jingles for Don Elliott Productions and also
recorded for Playscape Records with Michael Mussilami, Randy Brecker,
Ray Drummond, Claudio Roditi, Ralph Moore, Thomas Chapin, as well as for
Janet Marlow and Phyllis Hyman. He has performed in concert with jazz
notables Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Kenny Burrell, Steve Rossi, Jon
Hendricks, Cassandra Wilson, among many others. In 2005 Kent released a
CD of his own compositions called Little Town by the Sea, a
tribute to Noank, a maritime village in his hometown of Groton, CT. The
CD was commissioned by the Noank Historical Society and the Groton
Tercentennial Committee for Groton’s 300th anniversary.
Kent was the first pianist to open at the famous Tropicana Hotel in
Atlantic City. He has been solo house pianist at the noted New York jazz
club Jimmy Ryan’s and has toured Europe with Czech trumpeter Laco Deczi.
He has collaborated with writer Melanie Greenhouse and composed music
for her popular theatrical productions Point of Land and The
Duchess. He has also collaborated with Connecticut Poet Laureate
Marilyn Nelson for the prestigious Sunken Gardens poetry festival and
recorded a CD Poems to Music. He recently composed and performed
music for a spoken word CD for the childrens’ book The Ladder.
Kent holds a music degree in Theory and Composition from the
University of Connecticut and a business degree from Boston University.
He has studied piano and theory with Ray Santisi, Charlie Mariano, Hal
Galper, Fred Hersch, Ron Brown, and Hale Smith. He has taught for
Berklee College of Music, Trinity College, The Hartford Conservatory,
The Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic as well as Summerkeys
in Maine. He also has been active as a performer and clinician for the
Hartford Jazz Society.

TOM DEVINO TRIO (personnel t.b.a.). Showtime: 8:30
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH
Drummer
MIKE AUGERI is producing a benefit concert to help out the folks
at the Rocky Hill Veterans' Home. Contrary to popular belief,
this place is under the aegis of the State of Connecticut's Dept. of
Veterans' Affairs; and not a part of the U.S. Veterans' Administration.
The facilities there are wonderful; what we propose it to provide funds
that drying-up budgets don't have for things like recreation and other
ancillary programs that aren't properly funded.
Mike's managed to get some superb talent involved: as well as some
awesome corporate sponsors.
Artists invited to appear and have responded include: Ben Bilello,
Kenny Aldrich, Joe Palmer, Rich Tortorigi, Mike Augeri, Steve Clarke,
Dezron Douglas, Matt Dwonczyk, Maxine Martin, Gary Wolsieffer, Sinan
Bakir, Noah Baerman, J.R. LaRosa, Dan Arcamone, Josh Evans, vocalist
Marion K. Sawyer, Dave Dana, Jovan Alexandre, Mark Kaplan, Ken Fischer,
Warren Byrd, MC WWUH jazz radio's Maurice Robertson, many more.
Buy tickets beginning September 1 for $22 per person; price goes up
to $28 the day before the show. The price is $30 if you obtain tickets
(if any are left) at the door. Call 860-561-0180 for reservations and
information. Your reservation will be held by credit card.
Many more exciting details to follow... mark your calendars!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1
THERESA WRIGHT is putting the finishing touches on her exciting new
album; a disc of all-original songs in an R&B vein. Theresa's voice is
fresh, clear and articulate; this music's jazz influence is very, very
clear. That, in combination with a restrained use of R&B riffs and
sounds makes for an approachable sound that's toe-tappingly delectable.
Pianist BRAD RICKERT will accompany Theresa, along with STEVE CLARK
on bass, JIM ARNOLD on drums and a bevvy of back-up singers. Showtime's
8:30. Please reserve (860) 561-0180 as Theresa's appearances here fill

SATURDAY,
OCTOBER 9: SPECIAL SHOW!
Szechuan Tokyo is proud to announce
the return of Jazz Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter MIMI FOX to our stage!
Mimi's just come out with a fabulous new concert DVD, "Live At The
Palladium" and is taking her inimitable style on the road for all to
enjoy live! We were thrilled to receive the news that she'd be in our
neck of the woods!
Jim Josselyn said in Cadence Magazine, “This may be the
finest solo jazz guitar playing I have ever heard.” Joe Pass said
"Fox plays with tremendous fire. She can do pretty much anything she
wants on her instument."
Won't you join us for an evening of
great jazz guitar sounds featuring the woman DownBeat Magazine
voted "Rising Star" three years in a row from 2003 to 2005. Showtime's
8:30.
Find out more about Mimi Fox at her
website:
http://www.mimifoxjazzguitar.com/index.html.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
MIMI FOX is at the peak of her career. Named “Rising Star” in
DownBeat's 2003 Critics Poll, she is also profiled in that magazine's
special feature, “66 Hot 6-Stringers: DownBeat's Look at the Guitarists
Making Today's Scene,” which presents “66 guitarists in the worlds of
jazz, blues and beyond whose work is innovating, invigorating and
perpetuating the guitar tradition.” From virtuoso solo guitar to
performances of her original music with orchestra, Mimi truly does it
all. She has performed with fellow guitarists Charlie Byrd and Charlie
Hunter, as well as with Grammy award winner David Sanchez, saxophonist
Don Lanphere, Manhattan Transfer's Janis Siegel, German Hammond B3 organ
phenomenon Barbara Dennerlien, among many others. She has shared the
bill with a wide array of artists including Diana Krall, Stevie Wonder,
Kenny Burrell, and John Sebastian, and has been guest soloist with
several orchestras, including Orchestra Sonoma, performing her original
scores.
Fox has composed music for theater and film, and has been featured on
numerous television shows such as BET on Jazz. Mimi maintains a
whirlwind touring schedule, playing major jazz clubs and festivals from
New York to Tokyo, including tours of the Caribbean, Japan, Thailand,
and Australia. She has performed at The Village Gate in New York City;
Blues Alley in Washington, D.C.; Jazz Alley in Seattle; and Yoshi's, the
Great American Music Hall, and Kimball's East in the San Francisco area.
She is a favorite at jazz and music festivals such as the Jazz on the
Water Festival, The Guinness Cork Ireland Jazz Festival, the Britt
Festival, the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, The San Francisco & San
Jose Jazz Festivals, The Perth International Jazz Festival, Bumbershoot,
Port Townsend, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. Phil Elwood, dean of the San
Francisco music critics, singled her out: “Outstanding performer? From
the galaxy of stars at the JazzFest, guitarist Mimi Fox came across as
the brightest.”
Newly signed to guitarist Steve Vai's Favored Nations record label,
she just finished recording a new CD to be released in March of 2004.
Focusing on Mimi's original compositions, it features legendary bassist
Ray Drummond and runs the gamut from blazing be-bop to greasy blues and
beautiful ballads.
Her most recently released recording, "Standards" (Origin Records),
is a solo guitar tour de force and has received rave reviews including
one from Jim Josselyn in Cadence Magazine who said, “This may be the
finest solo jazz guitar playing I have ever heard.” Charles Chapman
called Mimi “a fiery virtuoso” in Just Jazz Guitar magazine, and said,
“This is jazz guitar at its best.”
Kicks, her second CD as a leader, showcased her extraordinary soloing
and featured special guests Joey DeFrancesco on organ,
keyboardist Russell Ferrante, drummer Will Kennedy, and
guitarist Charlie Hunter. Kicks quickly rose to fifth place on
jazz radio charts and number 20 on Billboard jazz charts.
Allaboutjazz.com awarded Kicks four stars out of four and raved, “This
is a strongly melodic collection, and one that swings out
stylishly...Mimi Fox is a major talent...strongly recommended.”
Born in New York City, she started playing drums at nine, and then
guitar when she was ten. She was inspired by the wide variety of music
enjoyed by her family - show tunes, classical, Dixieland, Motown - and
her own youthful inclination toward pop, folk, and R&B. When she was
fourteen, she bought her first jazz album “because it was on sale.” The
one she chose had no guitarist, but she was “blown away” by it. That
album, John Coltrane's classic Giant Steps, changed the course of her
musical life.
She began touring right out of high school and eventually moved to
San Francisco in 1979, where she became a sought-after musician. She is
Chair of the Guitar Department at the innovative Jazzschool in Berkeley,
California, and has appeared as guest clinician at the University of
Southern California, Musician's Institute of Technology, CalArts,
University of Connecticut, University of Oregon, the Britt Music
Festival, and others. She has just written a book on jazz guitar studies
to be published by Mel Bay Publications.
Mimi Fox, fleet-fingered on both steel string acoustic and hollow
body jazz guitars, is a compelling musician, prolific composer, talented
arranger, inspired teacher, and dynamic leader of her own band.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22
VOCALIST KAREN FRISK
FEATURING KENT HEWITT AND THE GANG. Showtime: 8:00. Kindly call
860-561-0180 for reservations and further information.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23
DAN
ARCAMONE TRIO: Dan Arcamone - Guitar; Mark Small - Tenor Saxophone; Rich
Zurkowski - Bass; Joe Palmer - Drums. Showtime's 8:30. Kindly call
860-561-0180
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Swinging, soulful, energetic, gifted,
flawless, these are just some of the words that have been used by
critics to describe Connecticut based guitarist DAN ARCAMONE. Equally at
home as a composer and performer, Arcamone’s powerful yet elegant style
has been winning over audiences and critics alike. Drawing influences
from the likes of Pat Metheny, John Coltrane, and Michael Brecker,
Arcamone has developed a playing style that All About Jazz calls
“intellectually stimulating” and “high energy.”
A diverse player,
Arcamone is equally at home creating arcing melodies on a ballad as he
is taking the reins on a burning, rock-fused solo, qualities that have
caused him to make waves as both a leader and sideman. After building
his reputation as a sideman, most notably with the Damon Grant Project
with whom he recorded the album Sonidos Nuevos, Arcamone can now
be found leading his own trio consisting of Rich Zurkowski bass and Tom
Ash drums. The group, which performs Arcamone’s original, modern-jazz
compositions, is as adventurous as it is polished. Melded together with
a sense of communication that can only be developed by long nights on
the bandstand.
His debut album,
Trioisms, immediately turned heads and brought critical attention to
Arcamone the player and composer. All About Jazz described the
album as “genre-defying” and “ground breaking,” two monikers that
Arcamone wears well. Drawing from a diverse array of genres such as
rock, pop, jazz and the avant-garde, Arcamone’s musical style is hard to
pin down with a single term, needless to say it the result of years of
focused study and focused performances. These experiences have
culminated in a personalized approach to the guitar that challenges the
listener to think outside of their common expectations, while inviting
them to join Arcamone on his sonic explorations.
Dan Arcamone is
building on the success of his first album with the release of his
highly anticipated second record,
(In)Motion.
Alongside his working trio the new album features Mark Small, Brad Mason
and Kat Calvosa.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29
First
Hartford appearance of vocalist/recording artist/composer DIANE LINSCOTT.
Featuring PHIL BOWLER, bass; JOE MC WILLIAMS, piano; and JOE RONAN,
drums. Showtime 8:00. Diane Linscott is an extraordinarily talented singer who's cut seven albums of
music from The Great American Songbook.

a singer by attending the Jazz in July workshop with a faculty of

a top-notch singer, both warm and skilled”.
She has been based in the Sarasota, Florida area for the last ten
winter seasons establishing a large following performing at various
venues and in concert with her trio which is headed by first-call
accompanist, Charlie Prawdzik. Summer finds her at her cottage and
studio on the Maine coast where she actively engages in several
other art forms, including sculpture, metalsmithing, and
printmaking, as well as regular gigs and concerts throughout New
England with her trio headed by veteran jazz pianist, Gerry Wright.
For several years before coming to the Saraota area, Ms. Linscott

Of her singing Dan Barrett reviewed in The Mississippi Rag,
“although most of the singers of jazz’s Golden Age are no longer
with us, there are a few women singing today who seem to embody the
best aspects of their predecessors. Diane Linscott is one of them…”
Roger Crane, Writer for Planet Jazz and All About Jazz magazines
says, “What a pleasure in this world of “look at me” singers to hear
a “look-at-this-nice-song” singer. Diane Linscott is certainly a
songwriter’s best friend. She is a treasured rarity, a singer who
“tells a story” as well as “tells the music “. Diane is a delight.
“For some years now, the people of Maine have been keeping secret
the fact that in their midst is a very fine singer. Now the secret’s
out and Diane is steadily receiving more and more well-deserved
exposure…” Bruce Crowther, from review of Singin’ Around.
OUR DAY AT THE MOVIES reviewed:
"With a great idea for an album, Diane Linscott shows off her
gorgeous personal style in a collection of thirteen songs from
Hollywood's Golden Age, all originally performed by Doris Day. Ms.
Linscott is a top-notch singer, both skilled and warm, and she is
backed by a sympathetic band that features the graceful
accompaniment of Charlie Prawdzik on piano and the steady time of
bassist Mark Neuenschwander.
These are songs that deserve to be remembered, and we're grateful
to Diane Linscott for recalling them."
- DICK HYMAN
Ms. Linscott has recorded and produced seven CD’s on the DjazzL

Her monotypes and sculpture has been exhibited in many Maine
galleries including Turtle Gallery, Deer Isle; Danforth Gallery,

TONY
ALLEN AND HIS COMBO: Join "That Front Street Guy" for an evening
of smooth standards. He's our favorite crooner! This is classic
WWII-era music that swings hard and lyrics that're some of the
finest ever written.
Tony appears with JOE MC WILLIAMS, piano; LOU BOCCIARELLI, bass
and JOE RONAN, drums.
Showtime: 8:00. RESERVATIONS
REQUIRED: Please call 860-561-0180.
TONY ALLEN has been a fixture
on the musical scene in Connecticut for about 60 years. Now entering his
83rd year, his voice is still clear as a bell and his phrasing is
spot-on. Crooners half his age struggle with notes and songs that Tony
tackles with aplomb. Always involved in his community, Tony's as
comfortable singing in the dining room of a Senior facility as he is on
the big stage at a hotel or night club.
Always a crooner, Tony's most at home
with the Standards -- the songs of the Great Depression and the World
War II era -- the tunes that Sinatra, Dorsey, Goodman, Bennett, Crosby
and others made famous. Tony's at home working with a trio or fronting
for a big band. He's no Sinatra imitator; he's got his own deceptively
casual style that's actually based on years of practice, training and
discipline.
Tony's latest album, "I Remember
Front Street" is to this day selling briskly on CD Baby and has received
nation-wide accolades. From his days in Hollywood, California with the
singing group The Tempo Five, to stints with vocal groups in Connecticut
and New York, to his solo career right here in Hartford, Tony Allen is a
consummate professional.
Tony can be found once a month at
Szechuan Tokyo in the spring, summer and fall. Tony spends winters in
West Palm Beach, Florida where he sings at clubs, restaurants and
community centers.

LONG-TERM PLANS THAT'VE BEEN
SCHEDULED AND CONFIRMED:
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31 - NEW YEAR'S EVE
(June 15): I just heard from Ray
McMorrin in Japan. He, Josh Evans, Curtis Torian, Lummie
Spann and others have agreed to do NEW YEAR'S EVE at Szechuan Tokyo. This is a
dream come true for me and the excellent culmination of ten years' hard
work presenting jazz week-in and week-out. I'm just floored and couldn't
wait to tell all ...
It's going to take a lot of work to
pull this off; we're going to try to make tickets as affordable as
possible, perhaps with the help of some sponsorship. This will be the
New Year's Party to end all New Years' parties! Keep us in mind. We'll
be updating this post regularly with further information, so check back
often!
